About Conventional Cotton and Organic Cotton

Earth Totes offers sustainable products made with organic cotton to, amongst other things,  reduce single-use plastic bags and combat plastic pollution. We align with the goals of the United Nations Environment Programme. Both organic and conventional cotton are better for the environment than plastic alternatives.

  • Environmental benefits of organic cotton: organic cotton is grown without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or genetically modified seeds, using 91% less water than conventional cotton. It promotes biodiversity, improves soil quality, and conserves water, while emitting 46% less greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Issues with conventional cotton: conventional cotton contributes to soil degradation, water contamination, and harm to biodiversity. It requires significant water and extensive use of pesticides, leading to concerns about water scarcity and environmental harm.
  • Consumer choices and certifications: consumer choice between organic and conventional cotton often reflects cost and product features, but both indicate a commitment to reducing plastic use. Organic cotton is typically certified by organizations like GOTS and is more expensive due to lower yields and higher labour costs.

I write about reusable living and everyday sustainability

Through Earth Totes I write about practical sustainability — the small everyday choices that can reduce waste and help retailers offer products that reflect changing consumer values.

Why reusable products matter

Sustainability is often discussed in big global terms, but many changes begin with simple everyday habits.

Reusable bags, organic cotton products, and durable everyday accessories can play an important role in reducing waste while encouraging more responsible consumer behaviour.

Earth Totes focuses on those everyday products.

Three Careers

Law

I began my professional life in law, where writing, research, and clear analysis were essential every day.

Telecommunications

I later moved into telecommunications, working in a fast-changing industry shaped by innovation and the digital economy.

Sustainability

Today I bring those same analytical skills to sustainability — researching materials, questioning industry claims, and writing about the changes needed to build a more responsible fashion industry.

Writing and Practical Sustainability

Much of my writing today focuses on practical sustainability — solutions that retailers and consumers can adopt immediately.

Reusable products are one example of how simple material choices can reduce environmental impact while still offering useful, attractive everyday items.

Why Earth Totes Exists

Earth Totes exists to provide reusable alternatives to disposable products, particularly in everyday shopping and lifestyle accessories.
